The Cobra 148 GTL CB radio has been the mobile platform of choice for all serious CB'ers for over 30 years.
Historically, The best sets were always made in the Philippines earlier. I bought mine in 1978 and was lucky to get one of these little gems. The production of this particular model adopted in late 1990, but due to popular demand and production has resumed once again, they are easily available.
Rugged construction has always been a feature of all Cobra CB radios, and the 148 is no exception. You can live in environments more demanding which could quickly destroy it is lower.
The new units have been maintained in its original configuration tested. The only change is a minor cosmetic change that is now the connector microphone in front of the whole rather than on the side. This makes installation easy. Longer cables are standard microphone.
This model offers a total of 120 channels. It has 40 channels on AM and 80 channels on SSB (sideband unique). SSB channels are divided into 40 each in the lower sideband and the upper band.
The transmission power is the maximum allowed by the FCC rules – RF 4 watts on AM and 12 watts of RF in SSB.
The setup is certainly rich in functionality —
- Built in SWR meter, and calibration control of steel cables to the exact alignment of the antenna.
- Microphone Adjustable brightness control enhance Dynamik maximum transmit.
- RF allows adjustable gain control of the optimal configuration of the signal received in areas of strong signal and weak.
- The sound engine off to further reduce the amount of noise received.
- PA to change the unit to be used as a sound system with the addition of an external speaker.
There is another reason why this model has proved so popular. The lid has a lot space inside for mods, and there is a wide range of cards available in stores radio extensions to improve performance. Some are legal, others not.
