Using the USB MIDI interface for your Home Studio
To quickly summarize what you already know, the MIDI is a computer language that allows two different instruments hardware / software, or any combination of communication. One thing to note is that a computer language, and therefore there no audio involved in this process. The computers speak to each other by a series of 1 and 0, and that's all any music via MIDI made.
MIDI cables and interfaces are unlike anything else out there (except perhaps XLR). A MIDI cable is relatively thin, but their objectives are round and fat, and if you look at the side of the connection, which is actually a circle with 4 needles protruding from it – the cable ends are connected MIDI ports that have corresponding holes for the needles. Keyboard synthesizers and drum machines are usually modern MIDI ports on them, and buyers potential should definitely check before buying one. Even if you do not have MIDI hardware now, once you've learned how it was useful home may be safer. Most computers made today (not to be made) no MIDI ports on them, which requires a separate MIDI interface to connect to your computer (and therefore software).
The best way to connect a MIDI device to the computer is to purchase a USB MIDI interface. It is usually a small electronic device about the size of a cable modem or router. Ports will your MIDI keyboard, etc., then you connect to your computer via a USB cable – used to connect computers over (U is universal). Often, something more to connect cables, as USB requires installing drivers to work with your computer – these are the same types of drivers you need when you connect any piece of hardware your computer and printer, mouse, etc. Remember to check compatibility of the interface on any operating system you use (Windows 98, Vista, Mac, etc.).
The keyboard / Synth / drum machine''will have a MIDI Out port on it. Connect the MIDI cable on this issue and the other into the port, "MIDI" in its USB interface. Make sure that the interface connects to the computer via USB, install drivers, plug it all and should be ready to go.
