Alan Harpham, Chairman of the MPA, Program Management defined as follows:
"A number of projects related to a strategic objective common or end. "
This is not to confuse the program management and portfolio management, which describes the management of a portfolio projects are not necessarily related, they are generally united by sharing resources with a common strategic objective.

This streamlining project prevents any program developed for itself, rather than requiring the managers program to "kill their darlings" (individual projects) for the greater good (the program).
One of the biggest advantages of using a structured framework for the Program Management, including MSP, is that it reduces the possibility of going off the track, and allows managers program to remain focused on the strategy behind the program and the vision to achieve.
